FULL NAME: Winifred Ruth Adler
NICKNAMES: Fred or Freddie. Her dad calls her Freddie Spaghetti and Schnickelfritz. Her mom calls her Winnie, so she finds that nickname particularly grating.
AGE/DOB: 17 / April 6, 2002 / Aries Sun, Aquarius Moon
YEAR: Senior
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood. Though her father is afflicted with lycanthropy, the disease continues to have no known cases of being hereditary and Fred is a 100% lycanthropy-free human, despite claims she may make otherwise.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her/hers
SEXUALITY: Fred's in love with Fred. While she greatly enjoys and is indiscriminate about going out on dates, Proper Dating holds little appeal to her.
HOMETOWN: Elflock Falls, West Virginia, born & raised 🎵
APPEARANCE:You know when a parent looks horribly embarrassed by their mismatched little monster and says "she dressed
herself today", well, Fred Adler
dressed herself today. With Junebug's and Spellunking within easy walking distance all growing up, Fred's accumulated a very eclectic wardrobe that is completely and utterly unironic. Fred dresses with a great deal of pizzazz and style, just not any sort of style you're going to see featured in a fashion magazine. She LOVES accessories, boasting a large collection of Cool Socks, flower crowns, butterfly hair clips, fanny packs, and more. Why not wear them all at once?? She loves colors and patterns and doesn't give a hoot about any sort of Rules of Fashion - if she likes it, she wears it.
Nothing about Fred is petite. She's statuesque meets Pillsbury Dough Boy and finding a pair of pants that are both long enough AND can make it around her ass is always a feat. But those hips
do make it easy to clear a path down the hallway.
What would others say is their most prominent personality trait — what's the first thing people notice about them?Fred is dripping in confidence - but not in that sexy
oozing sort of way, more in a "damn, that girl must be confident if she's wearing
that" sort of way. It's like Weird Confident. Uses A Rolling Backpack As She Barrels Down A Crowded Hallway Confident. Fred takes the unconventional to the extreme, but she does it out of pure joy and love for every weird piece of clothing that adorns her body or strange sidenote bloating her already bloated scripts. That said, Fred knows she stands out in a crowd and she LOVES IT. She's
very egotistical and thrives on the looks and attention she gets. Sure, she's not the hottest girl in school, but she's going to be the most UNFORGETTABLE!!!!
How would this character describe themself? What do they think are their best and worst qualities?Oh, you want to know about Fred? Fred would LOVE to talk about Fred. And Fred would definitely say that she is a MISUNDERSTOOD CREATIVE GENIUS!!!!!! A REVOLUTIONARY OF OUR TIMES!!!!!!! A VISIONARY!!!!!!! Destined to be FAMOUS!!!!!!!
As for her worst qualities, SHE HAS NONE!!!!!!!!* As for her BEST qualities, how much time do you have????**
* She's a teeny tiny bit egotistical. And maybe a steam roller. And actually a pretty big weenie.** But she means well and is generally a kind person despite how utterly spoiled she is and has an overall manic excitement for life. What drives them to action? Doing good? Getting rich? Receiving praise?Oh, praise BIG TIME. Fred is an absolute ego monster whose every terrible childhood drawing was saved and displayed. (There's still plenty hanging up in her dad's barbershop.) She wants to be REMEMBERED FOREVER and have her face on a Chocolate Frog card that future generations are desperate to collect. Fred's head can not possibly ever get big enough and she has VERY selective hearing when it comes to criticism.
Beyond praise, Fred chases excitement. And then stops right on the edge of excitement before things get Dangerous.
How ambitious are they? What are their short term and long term goals?Oh, whoops. See above.
What are their opinions on rules? How do they interact with authority figures?Fred is someone whose gut reaction to doing something dangerous is "Let me ask my dad first." For such a bold personality, Fred is not a risk taker. That said, while she's quick to point out when something violates a rule, her adventurous spirit is just as quick to be convinced that "Okay, maybe this
once. Just don't tell my dad!"
Fred hates the idea of being in trouble and she falls in line for authority figures fast when the whip is cracked, though the more familiar Fred is with someone, the more likely she is to try a toothy aren't-I-so-cute grin on them.
How does this character handle group project assignments in class?Fred LOVES group projects. She loves getting in front of a class and talking animatedly while pointing at a poster board. If her other group members take just a second to breathe, she'll bowl through and take over the task of handling delegation with that wide maniac smile. She's also very much one of those kids who IMMEDIATELY yells out someone's name if the teacher lets the students pick their own groups.
How sensitive are they?Fred is a deeply self-assured steamroller and there's not much that manages to get under her skin. The Achilles heel to her monstrous ego is when someone goes to lengths to point out just how truly terrible at casting she is. Worse if they get on their high horse about how casting is an essential skill that any witch or wizard worth their salt ought to have down pat. For all the ego, Fred's quite sensitive when it comes to feeling like she barely made the cut for being considered a witch.
What is this character’s relationship with magic and the world of witches and wizards? Are they highly reliant upon magic? Are they a particularly inept spellcaster? Do muggle things seem alien? As implied above, Fred's relationship with magic is a hot button issue. When her magic
did finally develop, it was with a quiet putter and that's roughly where it's stayed. And that was deeply,
deeply disappointing. Having a Muggle for a father, it didn't create any sort of familial schisms, but Fred had long despaired of the fact that her homelife was devoid of any magic whatsoever yet as soon as she walked outside, she was surrounded by it. It was a world she loved and one that she had eagerly anticipated becoming a part of. As much as Fred enjoys standing out and just doing her own thing, she also dearly wants to belong to this world that she loves so much.
FUN FACTS:🐺 She's celebrated her birthday at Zippy Dip
every. single. year. since she was 2 years old.

🐺 The names of the protagonists in
The Peculiar Perils... keep getting changed, but they always start with a P.
🐺 She likes to run potential scenes by Bub, Timotheye, and the Muscheron because they never have anything critical to say.
🐺 ENFP, the Campaigner |
4w3, the Enthusiast
LANGUAGES: English and some basic Pennsylvanian German and Flemish. Mostly enough to know when her dad's annoyed (it's RARE!! she's his PRINCESS!!!) or what rude thing her half-brother is calling her.
HOBBIES: Getting lost in daydreams, writing her Grand Work of Art, directing her Grand Work of Art, collecting and dispensing historical fun facts, listening to gossip (for inspiration only!), cheesemaking, collecting small knives (they're for scraping reeds!), collecting Chocolate Frog cards, collecting Happy Meal toys for Muggle franchises she's never heard of, dancing oh-so-badly, trying out weird face masks
SKILLS:
??Writing?? | Skill level decidedly questionable. Fred takes the Marie Kondo approach to writing - it all sparks joy, so it all stays!!! Narrative cohesion won't get the best of HER. Fred's writing is VERY bloated and any unpredictable plot points are moreso because they're just completely out of left field than through any sort of clever subterfuge on the author's part.
The Peculiar Perils... (aka her Grand Work of Art) features of pair of shipwrecked British orphans falling through time and the various colorful characters and grand adventures they have along the way. It airs regularly on the school's Wireless station and she's recruited a number of classmates to perform the various parts.
??Directing?? | Skill level decidedly questionable. She writes! She directs! Her skill as a director is probably better than her skill as a writer but considering how off the rails the performers can get during airings of her show, that isn't saying much. But it can make for a very entertaining half hour of radio.
Bassoon/Flute | Fred's the type that just screams Band Nerd, and she absolutely is. Her preferred instrument is the bassoon which she performs during Concert Band season, but her first instrument during elementary school was the flute, which she performs during Marching Band season for practicality's sake. While her flute skills are largely serviceable, she is regarded as one of the top highschool bassoonists in the state - not that that's a highly competitive field. Like any double reed player worth her salt, Fred's tackled the auxiliary skill of learning to scrape her own reeds and her fondness of small knives is probably for the least edgiest reason at school.
Academic Trivia | Fred's horny for learning and her mind is especially good at filing away all those trivial pieces of knowledge that hopefully win money some day on Jeopardy. History is particularly her jam, but she's not too shabby either when quizzed on math and science fundamentals. A subject area that she does surprisingly fall flat in is literary trivia. She's been courted for the Arithletes team on more than one occasion but insists she's too busy (and even once had the audacity to say "Isn't that a little NERDY???")
Hair Trimming | She's got the basics of the family business down by now and she can keep your bangs tidy or your side burns under control, no problem. If you need a Real Haircut or want help with some crazy magical dye job, you really ought to go see her dad, though. Mostly because he grumbles with exasperation every time someone wants help looking like a peacock.
Cheese | Making, pairing. Fred's aunt is a hobbyist cheesemonger who's fostered a love of cheese in Fred ever since gifting her a copy of Charm Your Own Cheese at age 6. Fred's aunt often hosts a booth at the local farmer's market selling her goods and Fred is frequently on hand to help sell, advise on choices, and boast about which cheeses she helped make.
FAMILY:Hannes Adler | Dad | Lycanthropy-afflicted Muggle, also recently diagnosed with High Cholesterol | Barber/Owner,
Wulff Gang Barbershop. A rare Muggle living in Elflock Falls, Hannes remained in town following his divorce as much for easy access to resources to treat his disease as to allow his daughter to grow up near her extended wizarding family. Generally regarded as a little gruff, he's got an obvious soft spot for his daughter. Not so soft that he isn't going to continue to embarrass her by front manning a local Too-Old-To-Still-Rock band. Luckily they
usually stick to performing at Hap's Place, but they often find their way on stage during local festivals too. Hannes is also a regular fixture at home games and band recitals, and don't you
dare touch the dial on the Wireless when
The Peculiar Perils... is on. When he isn't sporting a considerable amount of body hair, his most distinctive trait is the rather heavy
accent he still retains from his childhood.
Little Brother | Golden Retriever. When Fred complained about wanting a younger sibling, they adopted a dog instead.
Agnes Verschueren (née [OPEN]) | Mother | Halfblood | International Magical Beings Aide Worker. A big dreamer humanitarian who decided small town life was stifling, Agnes lives in Antwerp now. Fred spent a few summers with her following the divorce, but Agnes was always busy with work so it didn't turn out to be the Grand Adventure that Fred was hoping for and they don't see each other much. They tend to butt heads when they do, Fred still hurt that her mother seems interested in taking care of everyone out there but her and her dad.
Bertholf Verschueren | Step-Father. His Belgian waffles are on point.
Robbe Verschueren | Half-Brother. Makes fun of Fred's terrible Flemish on the rare occasion that she visits.
Extended [OPEN] Family | Wizards. Rural hedgewitches of a sort, there's lots of them holed up in the area and many of them are involved in raising mundane and magical livestock or gathering and growing potions ingredients. Fred is closest to her
Aunt Enid, who she shares a passion for cheese with.
Extended Adler Family | Muggles. The Adler clan is largely comprised of Amish affiliated Pennsylvania Dutch scattered across rural Lancaster County, PA. Hannes' has been out of contact with them since leaving the community and unexpectedly being thrown into the wizarding world.
BACKGROUND:You wouldn't know it passing him on the street, but Hannes Adler had quite the story to tell by the age of 25. But
that's a tale for another time, because THIS is a story about FRED Adler, half-werewolf and CREATIVE VISIONARY. Okay, okay, so maybe Hannes DOES have an important role to play in all of this too.
Werewolf Support Services has long been a severely underutilized resource in the UK and it's honestly not a whole lot better in the US - worse, maybe, in a land of stay-out-of-my-business patriots who aren't any more eager than their British counterparts to put their name on a register identifying themselves as afflicted with the disease. Hannes Adler, therefore, was met with an incredibly eager staff of supporters ("Oh! We've never had a
Muggle before!") when he crossed the threshold the first time, still reeling from the discovery that not only were werewolves real, but so were witches, wizards, and all sorts of things that go bump in the night. For a few months he tried to straddle both worlds, neither of which he fit comfortably in, until his fateful first date with a pretty social worker named Agnes.
Fast forward a couple years later and Hannes and Agnes were welcoming their first child together, a decidedly unfurry daughter that they named Winifred. Fred was doted on constantly from the start, every completely typical small spawn achievement treated akin to the moon landing. But as time went on, the love of a shared child could only get them so far as what Hannes and Agnes wanted out of life no longer was in sync. To Hannes, a simple life surrounded by magic
was a great new adventure, but Agnes yearned for far more than a dead end job in a rarely utilized BoMB department surrounded by the same family and friends she'd been with her entire life. She wanted to
help people and she wanted to
see the world and she'd recently read an article about the humanitarian crisis the fey folk of the Low Countries were facing and the same spontaneous dreamer nature that had led her to marry a
Muggle Werewolf had her ready to drop everything and head overseas. So that's exactly what she did.
It would take a few more years for the divorce papers to show up, but with Agnes gone Hannes had a decision to make: return to the Muggle world and try to figure out how to be a single werewolf father to a barely five year old witch without any real guidance, or remain an odd outsider in a magical world but well within reach of important resources for both himself and his daughter. Even though Hannes had turned his back on his family and community so many years ago, he couldn't take that away from his daughter and so Agnes' father was thanked for letting them hole up in the hills with them for the last five year and he bought a small house in Elflock Falls proper, renovating the first floor to serve as a barbershop - a rare trade that even a Muggle could be successful at in an all-wizard town.
The fact that Fred had yet to display the slightest hint of magical talent wasn't cause for concern. Not that Hannes would have known what to look for anyway - he readily accepted any of his beloved small daughter's claims about her abilities, fully under the belief that she
was actually chatting away with their new puppy until Mr. Swint chortled quite merrily when Hannes relayed the news to him during his monthly potion pickup.
But what was Fred supposed to do? She could go outside and bother the neighbor's garden gnomes or press her face against the window in amazement at Down Home Solutions, but as soon as she went home, the most magical thing to do was sit and listen to the Wireless. For as much as she was doted on as Daddy's Little Princess, her father was deeply frugal when it came to buying whatever frivolous flying beeping whatchamacallit was in the shop windows today. What d'yeh need that for when yeh've got a mind, he'd ask. So if she told tall tales and kept insisting "Well I can't do it NOW," then that's exactly what he'd asked for.
School was a lot of the same. At least when she started kindergarten no one could do much of anything and all the kids were dumb enough to believe whatever wild thing Fred claimed she was able to do,
on account of being a half-werewolf and all. Skepticism set in as they all got older and the teachers were less willing to humor childish antics. ("
Please stop chewing on his arm. You're just getting it wet.") Still, Fred never worried for a second - she BASICALLY got everything she ever wanted in life, so OF COURSE she was going to be able to do magic. Any day now!!! She was just taking her time because it was gonna be SO impressive when it finally happened and they were ALL gonna be BLOWN AWAY!!!!
It's no surprise then, that Fred looked to the approach of 6th grade with excitement. She had her eyes set on attending Ilvermorny - Malstrom was too expensive and ANYWAY that's where Erica Ratley was going and the sooner Fred didn't have to see her, the BETTER. Her grand adventure was FINALLY going to be starting. ...And then it didn't. Fifth grade finished and Fred still hadn't managed to cause anyone to accidentally blow up, let alone made a candle flicker for the slightest of seconds. Ilvermorny sent a polite letter about being a school of
magic and therefore unable to welcome Fred and Fred's teachers at Elflock Local were frank with Hannes about something everyone else in town seemed to already know: Fred was a Squib.
Hannes was once again faced with the dilemma of not fitting in either world, and now it seemed his daughter didn't either. Sure, they drove into Morgantown sometimes to catch a movie and eat McDonald's and it was generally a grand time, but that was the extent of Fred's interactions with the Muggle world. And there was still the matter of all her kin nearby. In the end, school officials agreed to let Fred attend for one more year, on account of what good members of the community Fred and Hannes were, but if Fred still hadn't shown signs of magic by the end of the year, they simply couldn't have her taking up classroom resources.
So Fred got her wand and began futilely waving it through Charms and Transfigurations classes. Other classes were easier to keep up with, but it still wasn't until midway through the year that Fred's wand finally let out its first splurt of sparks. It was an incredibly underwhelming display, but it was enough to get her the stamp of approval as a
full-fledged witch.
Not only did this mean that Fred DID get everything she ever wanted, it ALSO meant that Ilvermorny and GRAND ADVENTURES were back on the table. And yet.. Fred hesitated. Not that she'd ever admit it, but she was
scared. She'd barely made it to this point and what if Ilvermorny decided to send her back because she wasn't a good enough witch? What if the kids were all mean like Erica Ratley had been? What made Ilvermorny that great anyway, HUH? SURE, it was hundreds of miles away and it wasn't boring old Elflock Falls, but that castle was really old so it probably SMELLED.
And BESIDES, Erica Ratley was GONE and Freya Norris was at school now and she was COOL, so REALLY Fred wasn't
scared. She was making a
completely well-informed decision. After all, Peckenpaugh had a castle TOO (kind of) and her dad NEEDED her (not that he hadn't successfully survived nearly 15 years in the wizarding world at this point).
So Fred stayed in Elflock Falls and it 100% wasn't because she was afraid to go on a Grand Adventure.
WAND: Dogwood, rougarou hair, 13", pleasantly springy. Fred's wand is a loud and mischievous thing, often requiring a great deal of hyping before it'll perform at its best. Fred insists it's
horribly egotistical and she doesn't know why they got paired.
FAMILIAR: A
buff sizzle hen named after Uric the Oddball. The uncle she got her from insists her mother could curse anyone who looked at her the wrong way, but Fred's seen no signs of this being a hereditary ability. (YET!!!!)
CAREER GOALS: Fred has some lofty goals, but chief among them are: becoming a Famous Writer/Director/Producer, playing bassoon for an international wizarding orchestra, and making it on a Chocolate Frog card.
PART-TIME JOB: None. Fred helps out at her aunt's booth at the farmer's market sometimes, but if she's sweeping floors at the barbershop that's a pretty good sign she got in trouble. (Which happens NEVER!!!)
CLASSES: FRED!! LOVES!!! TO LEARN!!!!!! She's an eager participant in class discussions and always does her homework first before goofing around for the evening/weekend. She also lacks a single academically competitive bone in her body.
Fred's also very poor at spellcasting and her schedule very much reflects this, having dumped Charms class as soon as possible. (Who wants to do cool wand tricks ANYWAY?!?)
Potions | Potions is a solid class for Fred and the only one of the three cornerstones of magic that hasn't given Fred a great deal of trouble growing up. That said, she her passions lie elsewhere.
Transfigurations (H) | Tenacity only gets you so far, but it does get you somewhere!!! It helps that Ms. Min isn't exactly a hard ass. Fred continues to torture herself by taking Transfigurations specifically so she could qualify to take Animagus Studies this year. (Which she's gonna be a NATURAL AT!!! It's in her GENES!!!)
Astronomy (H) | Okay, so Fred's MAYBE peripherally aware that there's ALREADY a rather famous tv and radio program that journeys through space and time, but her interest in Astronomy is far less about how cool space is and far more about How Magic Works because magic is even COOLER than space. (And like maybe she can use that knowledge to help her cast better. Maybe. No biggie.)
Cryptozoology & Magizoology | Anyone who has ever met Fred has heard about how she's a half-werewolf so this is BASICALLY like taking a biology class. (She still isn't, but her dad still
is a werewolf.) There's a personal stake in the class either way and as a wand-lite class, this is one she excels in.
Herbology | Fred does NOT have a green thumb, but she's not too shabby when it comes to plant identification and remembering the various uses of things. She's eager and tries hard, so she does quite well in the class.
Hermeticism | After a strong start with devouring the text books, Fred's been struggling hard in this class ever since they moved from theory to practical application. She could have dumped it like Charms, but between being horny for learning and her ego wanting to at least be able to say that she KNOWS more ABOUT magic than the average wizard, she's been sticking it out.
History of Magic (H) | Fred LOVES history class, though she arguably far more enjoys the historical fun facts than diving into deep analysis of the motivations behind major historical events. She gobbles up every lecture, filing the information away as new fodder for potential storylines.
Music (H) | Fred and Madam Beridze have been butting heads ever since Fred said she thought
Pillywickle! was too
predictable. Unfortunately for Madam Beridze, Fred
loves being part of band, so they've mostly agreed to disagree about
Pillywickle! and stick to the music.
Animagus Studies | Ginger Pomeranian. Fred failed to make the cut for Animagus Studies last year and making it in this year was a point of "HALF-WEREWOLF" PRIDE. She's in for a rough year as she quickly discovers that she is
not a natural, but becoming an Animagus is something she's had her heart set on for years, to follow in her father's footsteps, so to speak, and understand and bond with him better.
EXTRA-CURRICULARS: A/V ClubFred originally tried her hand at directing for the stage, but after a ~difference of opinions~ concerning the relative quality levels of
Pillywickle! versus Fred's own work, she was asked not to return to Performing Arts Club her junior year. Well
that's fine, because Fred took A/V Club by storm last year as a result, pulling together a very grandiose radio play that Fred writes, directs, and sometimes provides minor voices in. This is the second year that
The Peculiar Perils... will be airing, a serialization written and directed by Fred.
Appalachian History | As a passionate History Nerd, it's no surprise that Fred's been an eager member of this club since freshman year. She's heard all sorts of odd folktales from relatives growing up, so she loves getting out there and exploring the stories with an Actual Expert.
Bowling | Watch her granny roll a ball down a lane. Fred is 100% here to support her boy Kermie.
Band | Flute (Marching), Bassoon (Concert). After A/V Club, Fred's major club devotion is to Marching Band. She's one of those kids who LIVES and BREATHES Marching Band when the season's on.
Creative Writing/Book | Fred is not remotely shy about sharing her creative works and is unjustly smug about the fact that SHE isn't writing fanfiction!!!!!! (Because her works certainly are
highly derivative.) She's not nearly as dedicated to making it to book weeks, because reading other people's books is just kind of, whatever?????
Muggle Magic | IS there a cooler way to spend a Saturday evening???
SORTING?: Fred's wanted to live in Deeplurk's castle manor since the first time she laid eyes on it. A Gothic castle? In the middle of a lake? With a rain tunnel entrance? Fred's before-graduation bucket list includes floating in the lake wearing a gauzy white dress and being rescued by a dashing classmate. All the things that make Fred an ideal Mothgarden or Wildgulch are all the reasons she could never have gone anywhere but Deeplurk. She's curious, she's creative, she's outgoing, she's weird, and she's
always doing it her way.
